Aquarius is an interactive installation, which like the changing clouds in the sky, changes with time and location.
The audience is invited to take a blue plastic cup from a stack, fill it with water, drink and as they cannot put the cup down, they would normally throw the container away. In this simple process each individual leaves a trace of their D.N.A. proof that each and every one in society has or is complicit in the contamination of our water and in the disregard of forever and non-recyclable plastic. This habitual act is indicative of all water drunk from plastic containers, as water passes through the body to emerge with plastic particles back into the water cycle. The cyclical nature of this repetitious act, has now become part of the meteorological cycle: as our waste is disbursed into our river systems, which in turn is evaporated. Condensation then precipitation reintroduces the water back into the earth and water systems. Each waterdrop now contains minuscule molecules of plastic. Once a participator has attached their cone cup with another to create a chain, they leave behind their forensic mark embedded in the sellotape for eternity. These chains are then added and reshaped on a net of fishing tackle to hang from the ceiling or rafters at each location, like atmospheric clouds. Throughout the installation the work is at risk of gradual deformation even destruction so periodically invigilators are invited to lift some of the string of cones back to replicate evaporation. The intention throughout is to leave participates and viewers to consider the impact and accountability of our collective actions, which ultimately affects the health of all living matter, our environment and future survival. |
