Within The Limitations | Instagram Open Call Kaleidoscope Gallery, Sevenoaks 9-19 October 2024 Tesco's Community Centre, Ashford 8-10 March 2024 Close on 800 artworks from over 100 artists from 28 countries where in the exhibition, held at the Community Centre on the first floor of the Tesco's supermarket in Ashford. The closing date fell on Valentine's day, so the exhibition utilised the store’s dissuaded display stands. The aim was to present the artwork outside a white gallery space, so that anyone could just wander around and be challenged with where the line existed between what is art, what is precious and what is a commodity. In an age where the value of something is short, resources are used once and where our actions, to keep or throw away, determine our society. As yet we do not have the desire, research, investment or the legislation to halt the production of single use plastic. This exhibition offered a secondary use by using the clear compact disc cases as picture frames. Every artist donated their work in support for this project and to highlight the need for society to reappropiated waste materials. The compact disc was invented in 1979 and before streaming, it was the most sophisticated way to consume and store music and audio. They defined our culture and helped us find our sense of identity. By 2007, an estimated 200 billion music compact discs had been sold, (this excludes the DVDs, console games and computer software which also utilised this technology). Our material culture leaves a legacy; compact discs can not be recycled. Drawing on the tactile nature of the compact disc case, Within The Limitations is a project created by Gregory Daines and Lorrain in collaboration with Ashford Visual Artists, to reuse several hundred compact disc cases following a series of my installations. This open call was open to everyone between 1st November 2023 - 14 February 2024. The only criteria was that all the artwork summited had to fit 12x12cm, be no thicker than 0.5cm and that all applicants had to upload and follow @ashfordvisualartists and @withinthelimitations on Instagram. |
